Established in 2022, this trail weaves through the heart of some of France’s most prolific mountain ranges, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and challenging terrain. Stretching over 3,000 kilometers, the Hexatrek is divided into six distinct stages, each presenting its own unique landscapes and experiences.

On May 31, 2023, I started Southbound from Wissembourg toward Hendaye.
I was fortunate to hike the Hexatrek in 2023, just a year after its pioneers finalized the route. I was drawn to the newness of this trail and the even greater possibilities of the unknown. I loved the idea that I could be one of the first, and indeed, I was the first North American woman to complete the full 3034 km trail in one continuous footpath.

From the serene, dense forests of the Vosges, through undulating vineyards, the pastoral charm of the countryside, historic villages, and some of the most breathtaking mountainscapes you’ll ever have the pleasure of encountering, the Hexatrek is a masterclass in geographical diversity. The trail is constantly taking you through new terrain to keep your mind occupied and your heart full.
Cultural Immersion: As you traverse the trail, you'll encounter a wealth of cultural experiences. The Hexatrek winds through historic villages, buzzing market towns, and even skirts the edges of vibrant cities. This trail isn't just a journey through nature but a passage through the heart of French culture and history.
Historical Significance: The regions along the Hexatrek are steeped in history, from ancient Roman roads to medieval castles, as well as more recent historical monuments from World War II. You'll walk paths that have been trodden for centuries and learn about the historical events that shaped these landscapes.

There are a number of holidays that will happen during the summer that if you plan around can be a fun experience and not just an inconvenience for resupplying.
Scenic Highlights and Must-Visit Spots: The trail passes can't-miss scenic vistas, charming towns, and hidden gems along the trail. These are often highlighted on the map to help you plan your itinerary to ensure you experience the best the Hexatrek has to offer.
Camping and Facilities: There are plenty of beautiful places to bivouac and camp along the way, but what makes this trail unique to other long trails are the refuges, backcountry huts and cabins, and guest houses.
Challenging Terrain: This isn’t your grandmother’s thru-hike and it’s not another walk in the woods. The Hexatrek offers seriously challenging terrain that will push you to your limits and improve your skills as a hiker and backpacker. 1000-meter climbs, boulder fields, route finding, snow traversing, river crossings, scrambling, and unpredictable weather all add up to make the Hexatrek a true contender.
